yaks!

see if you can follow the string...

when i was little, i guess i had a pretty active imagination. i tell the story about how my grandmother taught me to love research by going to the public library, choosing a reference book at random, opening to a page at random, and researching whatever topic it was. could be new mexico, kangaroos, bigfoot, whatever.

at some point it must have been yaks.

i remember vaguely, and mom swears by it, that i wrote all these stories about "me and my yak." never mind the grammar in the title, but my yak and i went everywhere. i don't think we ever went to tibet (where yaks are usually found), but i am quite fond of yaks, and have an affinity to any reference thereto.

i enjoy making up silly songs and am currently addicted to "kids place" on xm radio. anytime i'm home with jack, i try to have it on. silly songs, new lyrics to old songs ("the rooster is tired" rather than "the roof is fire" by the bloodhound gang) with made up bands like juice box heroes pass the time quickly. my little bugger is quite the jammer, so we enjoy music time together.

last night a song came over the radio between "who let the dogs out" and some random sheryl crowe song. it was called "i like yaks" by Roger Day. quality stuff. if you can find it for free to listen to (try http://www.rhapsody.com/roger-day/dream-big) i highly recommend it. it's got a good beat, random callouts (how many kids' songs from our era referenced tibet, the dali lama, and nepal?).

enjoy.

I Like Yaks! By Roger Day

Big fat and furry they’re never in a hurry
They always like to wanda with the Dalai Lama (what's a dalai lama?)

CHORUS
As a matter of fact, Jack.
I Like Yaks!
Big and black, making tracks, carrying a Sherpa’s pack, yaks! (what's a sherpa?)
Thin air never hurt ‘em they’re the perfect beast of burden
If the place you want to get to is Everest or K2

Aummm, B’Aummm (Chikiti Cha)
Aummm, B’Aummm (Chikiti Cha)

Yeah, they’re the major players throughout the Himalayas
All the hip Nepalese drink their milk and eat their cheese

CHORUS
As a matter of fact, Jack.
I Like Yaks!
Big and black, making tracks, carrying a Sherpa’s pack, yaks! (what's a sherpa?)Thin air never hurt ‘em they’re the perfect beast of burden
If the place you want to get to is Everest or K2

Early in the morning (Yak Yak Yak)
I start singing this song (Yak Yak Yak)
Then my brother and my sister (Yak Yak Yak)
They start singing along (Yak Yak Yak)
Yeah, we sing it as we travel (Yak Yak Yak)
All the way to Tibet (Yak Yak Yak)
We’re gonna search until we find one (Yak Yak Yak)
Then bring it home as a pet (Yak Yak Yak)
Then we’ll put it in the backyard (Yak Yak Yak)
And start yakking everyday (Yak Yak Yak)
Invite all the neighbors over (Yak Yak Yak)
So all of them can hear me say (Yak Yak Yak)
Come on everybody (Yak Yak Yak)
Come on and raise your voice (Yak Yak Yak)
It’s a yak revolution (Yak Yak Yak)
For every girl and every boy (Yak Yak Yak)

CHORUS
As a matter of fact, Jack.
I Like Yaks!
Big and black, making tracks, carrying a Sherpa’s pack, yaks!
Thin air never hurt ‘em they’re the perfect beast of burden
If the place you want to get to is Everest or K2
